Book Editing Process

1.       The first reading is performed to gain an understanding of your manuscript, identify inconsistencies and unclear or errant sentences, and generate ideas for content development in the form of comments and suggestions made using Microsoft Word’s Track Changes tool. This may also include plot and character development if relevant.

2.       The information gained from the first reading is used to target particular sections and problem areas and strengthen the overall structure and consistency of the manuscript.

3.       Line editing is performed, which helps to identify issues with the manuscript at a more precise level. The clarity, cogency and consistency of the writing are improved, and the writing is polished line by line, word by word. The manuscript is essentially “cleaned up” in this first round of line editing. Additional comments and suggestions are also made. While proofreading is not our first priority during the editing process, we do fix misspelled words and incorrect or omitted punctuation marks.

4.       A second round of line editing is performed in order to further improve the writing and correct anything that may have been missed or misinterpreted during the “clean-up” phase. Additional comments and suggestions are made if necessary.

5.       A final reading is performed to ensure that everything is in its proper place, including our comments.

6.       In addition to the comments and suggestions made within the document using Microsoft Word’s Track Changes tool, an overview of our developmental comments is provided so you may have an idea of what to look for during your review of the edited manuscript. Lengthy comments regarding specific sections of the manuscript are also included in this document so as to not take up space in the manuscript itself. An explanation of how to use the Track Changes tool is also provided.
